Your current morning routine is probably automatic and may be mundane but did you know that it sets the stage for your entire day and even the type of life you lead longer term? What’s your morning routine? Do you reach for an electronic device? Dash off to the kitchen for coffee? Jump up in haste, or perhaps lay in bed listening to banter on an early morning radio show? What you do in the morning and then how you kick-start your body to break your fast (get it, breakfast) can be the most important steps for a healthy and happy day and life!
If you already understand that breakfast is the most necessary meal of the day, then you are part way there. But I’m not talking about just having food - you already hear this everywhere. Let’s roll back and cover more than food.
Follow these 4 simple tips to fuel your body, soul and life!
They take very little effort and will return endless benefits.
1. Gratitude
-
By focusing on gratitude before you even mentally and physically get into the day, you immediately rewire yourself towards appreciation and positivity. Here’s what I ask every client who works with me to do: 1st thing in the morning, stop for a nanosecond (that’s all it takes, a few seconds) and decide what you are grateful for today. It can be anything: that the sun is shining, that your spouse already made coffee (you can smell it), that you have wonderful friends. Get the idea? And say it out loud or write it down to lock it in, to own it. I particularly like clients to write it down because then they can return to it and reflect, or use it to pull themselves back into gratitude if it slips. The important part is starting the day with gratitude. Magic does happen when there is gratitude, just wait, you will see.
2. Self Care & Love
-
Doesn’t it seem like everyone talks about being harried and busy, taking care of everyone except themselves? You can still be busy and driven but let’s not forget about YOU. Find a place for yourself in your mornings (even if not the second you get up). Create some little way to nurture ‘you’ -- a moment where you don’t come second but are taken care of first. Is this when you go for a walk, or spend 15 minutes writing in a journal? Maybe it’s as simple as getting up a little earlier than everyone else so it’s quiet and your focus is not pulled away immediately. Find a small way to honor and care for yourself every single day (even if not in the morning). Make it meaningful and live it; don’t hurry through it. Put on your oxygen mask before you help others with theirs. In the long run it will make you a better you.
2. Kick Start Your Body & Metabolism
-
It almost sounds silly but your body has been quiet and on vacation for the night and when morning comes you are essentially breaking a fast. This is why what you put into your body first is so important. This is when your metabolism is being restarted and the job of fueling for the day begins. By starting with a drink of warm lemon water with a dash of either cayenne, ginger or turmeric you give your engine what it needs to get going: hydration, loosening and flushing toxins, stimulating digestion, balancing your ph, balancing electrolytes and boosting immunity. Check! All systems ‘Go’. Add this one to your routine and see changes happen. Before food, coffee or tea have warm lemon water.
In the end, there is one last tip that will make all the difference in the world. You need to remember that starting a morning routing doesn’t mean that you will be perfect but it does reinforce persistence. Of course there will be hiccups, bumps in the road, and even downright misses. That’s life. Committing to a morning routine means that even if you hiccup today you will do it again tomorrow. There are no failures. Having a morning routine is like wiping the slate clean everyday regardless of what happened yesterday or last night. No guilt. No judgment. Just wake up and follow your morning routine. Over days, weeks and months you will start to see a habit forming, your persistence grow, your outlook on the world brighten, and good health and spirit around you. Those reasons sound worth it, don’t they? So, what will your morning routine be tomorrow?
